Kenya’s story is so inspiring because it started with just wanting something for herself in addition to her full-time job as a nurse, and taking care of her kids. She had some time on her hands and decided to just take the leap and start her business! After two years of consistent effort and building that financial security, she no longer needed her full-time nursing job, so she quit and began to focus her attention instead on raising her 11-year-old and 4-month-old kids, and continuing to grow her “side hustle.” Kenya is a dedicated mother and business owner, and I’m so thankful she was able to share her story here.

Some of the topics we covered in the interview:

I also want to dive a little deeper into a couple of the topics we discussed, mainly, how to know when it’s time to quit your job, and money management:

Let’s Talk About “Retiring” Your 9-5

I was newly married, and had no kids when I decided to go all in with being a business owner. I quit my job without any proof of profit (and freaked my husband out in the process) but ultimately, we had low expenses, low debt, and were able to make it work and even thrive through it all! HOWEVER, it’s a little trickier for a mom, like Kenya, whose family is dependent on her income, let alone a single mom! As Kenya would say, don’t just quit your job! Find a way to work up that side income until you can replace your monthly expenses.

Here are some things you need to be doing along the way:

  • You have to actually start something. Check out Kenya’s tips in the video for how to find a good business fit, whether that’s through a network marketing company, or starting your own business!
  • Learn to keep a household budget. I highly recommend tightening down for a couple of months or years (however long it takes!) to get rid of debt. Check out resources like Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps for help! It is completely doable. Once you have your debt under control, learn how to budget for your household (I use the free EveryDollar App!). When you know EXACTLY what your expenses are, you’ll know exactly how much you need to make at your side business regularly to be able to quit your full-time job. You’ll want to take into consideration business taxes and benefits (such as healthcare and retirement).
  • Learn how to sell and market yourself. Think about connecting with people and providing value, versus selling, and make sure that you’re following up! As Kenya shared, the fortune is in the follow-up. Whether you’re a coach or consultant, selling MLM products, your own products, or building your network… persistence in following up is definitely a key to making more sales!
  • Devote time to your business regularly. Be consistent. Schedule it in, and focus on the tasks that will actually move your business forward instead of the fluffy stuff. Even 10-30 minutes per day, is at least an hour per week or 52 hours per year! You will get there if you keep moving forward.
  • Press on… Even when you don’t feel like it. If you can make consistent strides in the right direction YOU. WILL. GET. THERE. Don’t give up! Watch some inspirational videos, wake up 5 minutes early and spend some quiet time just thinking about why you’re doing this! Get help if you feel like you’re not getting the momentum you need. But whatever you do, don’t give up.

It’s OK to Fail.

That’s why you hustle on the side before you quit your 9-5! If you find that you don’t love your side business, it’s alright to start something NEW that you love, but I would REALLY encourage you to examine your current business and see if there’s an aspect of it that can be tweaked to make it fit better for you. For example, is the way you’re targeting customers feeling inauthentic? Dig deep into your WHY, and find a way to reach people that is heart-centered and shows you care. When asked how it felt to fail 1,000 times trying to invent the lightbulb, Edison replied: “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

YOU CAN DO THIS TOO. That’s why we’re showcasing REAL stories! Kenya is a Goal Setting Mama just like YOU who decided she wanted more and went for it! Don’t make excuses, just start!
